The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Hands On - Gamescom 2010

On Day one of the Gamescom 2010 in cologne Germany, we had the chance to go hands on with the new zelda directly developed for the wii, with motion plus in mind.

I didn't mind standing in line for about 20 minutes to take a swing with link's sword, a technology that miyamoto said they copied from wii sports resorts sword fighting game!
And yes the latest Zelda just deserved this.

The demo on the showfloor, which puts you into a little sandbox to try out all the latest items link can controll, was just the same that Nintendo put together for E3 two months ago.

Sword Control
Wow! Miyamoto's team really deserves respect in what they've put together here.

Shield up!
Shield up!
Lfting the wiimote up around your body from left to right up your head and down again, does just the same thing in game! You can even twist your wrist and link does it too!

This opens up a lot new game mechanics that couln't be done before.
Enemies have shields to block attacks from you and you just have to be quick and find that one spot that's open to land a strike!

Shield
Lifting up your nunchuck you can control your shield in the same stunning way that you control your sword.
If an enemy attacks you with some flying object (e.g. a flying stone, arrow etc) you can push your nunchuck forward, and if you have the right timing you can even reflect that object, to send it back where it came from.

Other items
Besides the sword and the shield we have the following items:

  • Beetle
This item is brand new to this zelda game. It allows you to fly through the level and even above the trees to get a good
overview of the level. If you're too far away the controll is back to link.
You can also collect items like hearts or rubins when flying around.

  • Bow
Bow and arrows are controlled just like the archery game in wii sport resort, which is a well done move by Nintendo, not reinventing somethings that's worked good before. You really have to aim with your wiimore and move the nunchuck back to draw the bow.

  • gamescom 2010 - Hands on
    gamescom 2010 - Hands on
  • Slingshot
The slingshot is controlled differently than the crossbow. You don't aim with the wiimote, you hold it upwards! Thanks to motion plus the movement from left to right is directly converted into the game.

  • Boomerang
    couldn't test this one

  • Whip
controlled with wiimote, just do a throwing move like movement, and it will whip and also collect items

  • Bomb

  • bombs are interesting, they can be rolled on the floor (holding wiimote downwards, just like bowling in sport resort), or thrown (hold wiimote up)

As you can see the new zelda has a lot to offer, and i'm pretty sure Nintendo has a lot of unrevealed things up it's sleeve!
What do you think of the new zelda, are you looking forward to it or not?

I'm excited for this. It seems like Nintendo is making the game they wanted to make with Twilight Princess. Yes, it was fun slashing the wiimote like a sword in TP, but with more precise arm movement readings it could have been so much more immersive. As it stands, TP was just a really, really good Zelda game. This game looks like it can knock TP's socks off. Graphics aren't as nice, but I don't play the Wii for graphics anyway.
Nintendo has always found ways to innovate their games, and this Zelde game proves to take things to a whole new level.

And, somehow, I'm already feel like I'm addicted to it.
